The Britannia Hotel is a charming Victorian mansion situated in Barrio Amón, a quiet historical district of San José. The original house was built in 1910 by the wealthy Spanish coffee baron Cipriano Herrero del Peral. In the lobby, tile floors, large stained-glass picture windows, a brass chandelier, and reproduction Victorian decor all help set a tone of tropical luxury. The Britannia Hotel is divided into two areas; the old house which houses five Deluxe Rooms and five Jr. Suites, and the new section housing 14 standard rooms. Elegant rooms are stylishly appointed with hardwood floors and furniture, high ceilings, and fans to keep them cool. Rooms come equipped with cable T.V., telephone, private bathroom with bathtub, hot water, safe deposit box and either one king size bed or two standard beds.

The mansion's former wine cellar houses a fine restaurant and bar. The restaurant, appropriately named “The Cellar”, specializes in a wide range of delicious international dishes creatively prepared by a professional chef. Guests may enjoy intimate gourmet dining accompanied by fine wine and attentive, friendly service.
