Located a safe distance from Costa Rica's most spectacular volcano, the Arenal Observatory Lodge offers travelers an opportunity to experience the thunder and fury of Arenal Volcano's frequent eruptions from comfortable rooms, or from one of the many viewing sites around the lodge.
Arenal Volcano erupted in 1968, after lying dormant for centuries, and has been continuously active ever since. Arenal Observatory Lodge rests in a private nature reserve, in the middle of one of Costa Rica's most vibrant natural habitats.

The lodge boasts 37 rooms divided among four eco-friendly structures that spread out across lush tropical gardens. Spacious rooms open onto private verandas with views of the lake and Arenal volcano. The two Junior Suites feature private bath, two king-size beds, a mini-bar and a mini-refrigerator. Seven of the Smithsonian rooms are located close to the main lodge and dining area. While at the Arenal Observatory Lodge, guests may take advantage of a large variety of tours and activities to acquaint themselves with the surrounding area. A waterfall hike or a dip in bubbling thermal waters are some of the favorites, but others include sport fishing and kayaking tours on Costa Rica’s largest body of water - Lake Arenal, guided bird watching excursions, horseback rides through magnificent scenery, a professional massage at the hotel’s relaxing spa facilities, a swim in the deluxe Infinity swimming pool, or a soak in the Jacuzzi. There is also a paved, wheelchair-accessible trail that extends 800 meters into the rainforest and provides excellent views of the volcano. As night descends guests will have a front row seat to a spectacular display of natural fireworks, as the volcano spews incandescent showers of molten rock and ash from its picture perfect cone.
