Tortuguero Jungle Canals Excursion

Natural and man-made canals become the primary mode of transportation in the Amazon-like region of Tortuguero. Traveling slowly along these waterways to Tortuguero National Park is an incredibly rich experience for wildlife enthusiasts, offering a chance to see monkeys, iguanas, and dozens of brightly colored tropical birds.

From the long, sweeping beach, maintained trails head into the forest, where visitors frequently sight toucans and even occasionally see flocks of vividly colored macaws. Above the paths in the treetops, howler monkeys swing, play and bellow out to each other. Along the beach, Tortuguero National Park protects nearly 14 miles of coastline and is one of the world’s most important marine turtle nesting sites. Four species of marine turtles arrive each year, including the Green Turtle, which has existed for over 200 million years and can weigh more than 400 pounds.

These primordial creatures nest in Tortuguero from July to October. Watching these massive turtles pull themselves out of the pounding surf and onto the sand is one of nature’s most amazing exhibitions.
