Arenal Volcano and Tabacón Hot Springs

We begin our Arenal Volcano and Tabacón Hot Springs adventure late in the morning, giving you a chance to enjoy the new day at a leisurely pace, or just sleep in. Arriving near La Fortuna, the massive conical volcano frequently rewards visitors with glimpses of towering columns of smoke billowing out of the crater. On clear nights, the natural fireworks display may even be more impressive, as the giant volcano spits out glowing red lava and huge rocks, which stand out against the black sky. Overnight at the Hotel Arenal Paraiso or similar.

The second day will allow for more intimate exploration of the Arenal Volcano and surroundings, as you explore the fields and forests that surround the volcano and lead up to its base, where you’ll find hardened lava flows.

Day three continues with your exploration of the area, taking an easy bike trek over paved roads through forests and around the base of the volcano. When you return, you can soak in the volcanically heated hot springs at Tabacón Resort. Behind you is the towering image of Arenal Volcano, from which The Tabacón River originates. The waters here are naturally heated to a soothing 102 F degrees year round. Bright tropical plants make up a gorgeously landscaped tropical garden, in the middle of which the Tabacón River forms dozens of relaxing thermal pools, inviting waterfalls, and gentle streams that will rejuvenate your body and wash your cares away. For additional pampering, the Spa at Tabacón offers facials, volcanic mud treatments and therapeutic massage. By the time you return to San José in the evening, you’ll feel completely relaxed and carefree.
