Costa Rica´s Delights Monteverde, Arenal Plus Options (7-8 Days) The Basics: Monteverde Cloud Forest and Arenal Volcano 3 nights / 4 days Day 1 - Arrival in San José After being picked up at the airport , you will be taken to San José for an overnight stay at the Hotel Don Carlos, a stylish hotel located in the city’s cultural district. Built at the turn of the last century, this elegant Victorian home has been completely refurbished and restored. The hotel’s well appointed rooms will provide guests with a pleasant ambience and a relaxing night’s sleep. Day 2 – Monteverde Cloud Forest After an early morning breakfast you will travel to Monteverde, Costa Rica’s premier cloud forest. This 26,000-acre reserve is home to an astonishing diversity of plant and animal species, including many rarely observed endangered species such as the jaguar and the exotic and dazzling quetzal. An emerald blanket of dense ferns and mosses conceals the forest floor beneath, while towering trees spread their stately branches, forming an impenetrable, yet vibrant canopy. Your tour of Monteverde includes an excursion to a local nature preserve where you may spot birds such as the silvery-throated jay, spangled-checked tanager, black-thighed grosbeak, and the yellow-throated finch. Mammals such as peccaries, puma, and mountain deer also can be seen. Stay the night at the lovely Hotel Sapo Dorado, or an equally inviting establishment. Day 3 – Monteverde Cloud Forest’s Sky Walk and Arenal Volcano After a delicious early morning breakfast, you will be taken to the SkyWalk - a unique system of seven suspension bridges that zigzag through deep canyons at the level of the treetops. Here you will experience the cloud forest from an entirely new and lofty perspective! Enjoy
a well-deserved lunch before continuing on to Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica’s
most spectacular geological attraction. The very active Arenal Volcano
frequently emits sounds of violent explosions, attended by clouds of gray,
brown, and orange gases. The day ends at Tabacón Resort, where
you can sooth your muscles in the clear, relaxing thermal springs.
At this point, you become the travel planner for your adventure. Design your own journey by choosing one of the three following options: TOUR OPTIONS OPTION #1: EXPLORE SARAPIQUÍ AND PACUARE 3 nights / 4 days A nice contrast to Arenal is the lush jungle of the northeastern zone of Sarapiquí. Bordering Braulio Carillo National Park, the forest is home to howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, white-nosed coatis, sloths, tapirs, and jaguars. Enjoy the rich rainforest habitat before continuing on to your exciting Pacuare River adventure, which we personally operate with pride and passion! The Pacuare is considered to be one of the foremost Latin American white water rivers, offering one of the most exhilarating tropical adventures anywhere. The river alternates between swiftly coursing rapids and placid stretches, making it one of Aventuras Naturales' most exhilarating rafting trips. Day 4 – Overnight in Sarapiquí From Arenal Volcano you will be transported to Sarapiquí and the Sueño Azul Resort, a charming lodge that rises over a lush hillside. The Puerto Viejo and San Rafael rivers merge to form an enchanting setting ideal for rest and relaxation. The resort is located close to Braulio Carillo National Park, and is thus a haven for bird watchers and other lovers of nature. The lodge offers attractive architecture, excellent amenities, and spectacular views. Spend
the afternoon on horseback, traversing the nine square kilometer Sueño
Azul farm. Alternatively you might take a guided hike through trails brimming
with riparian life or head off for a refreshing waterfall tour. Stay the
night at the Sueño Azul, where after the day’s adventure
is over you might elect to watch the magnificent river panorama or have
a drink while relaxing in the hot tub.
Tourist minivan: On Day Two you will be picked up at your hotel by our comfortable minivan and taken to Monteverde. At 2 pm we will pick you up and head for Arenal, where we will arrive at 5 pm. You will receive a private transfer from Arenal to Sarapiquí and Nature Adventures will furnish the final transfer from Sarapiquí to Pacuare to San José. Car Rental: One day after you arrive we will deliver your rental car to your hotel in San José. From there you will drive to Monteverde en route to Arenal and Sarapiquí. On Day 5 you will return the car at the Sueño Azul Resort. We will bring you back to San José in a comfortable minivan. OPTION #2: EXPLORE SARAPIQUÍ AND TORTUGUERO Day 4 – Overnight in Sarapiquí Leaving Arenal you will head for Sarapiquí and the wonderful Sueño Azul Resort. Here you may spend the afternoon on horseback exploring Sueño Azul’s nine square kilometers of property. Alternatively, you might take a guided hike through trails brimming with riparian life or head off for a refreshing waterfall tour. Before calling it a night, why not admire the spectacular river scenery from your private terrace, enjoy a romantic meal at the open-air dining room or sip a cool cocktail in a soothing Jacuzzi as you rest up from your exciting adventure-packed day. Day 5 – Mawamba Lodge, Tortuguero After an early morning start, you’ll head through the town of Guápiles and on to a delicious breakfast at the Río Danta Restaurant. After breakfast the Mawamba Lodge staff will escort you to the lodge’s private dock in the village of Matina. From there you will take a delightful 90-minute boat ride to the northern Caribbean town of Tortuguero. The Mawamba Lodge is located close to both the town and Tortuguero National Park. Situated on a sandbar between the Caribbean Sea and the Tortuguero Lagoon is the Mawamba Lodge. Walk along stunning beaches of exquisite beauty, or hike inland along well-marked trails that lead to lush jungle enclaves full of plant and animal life. Along these trails you have an excellent chance of spotting toucans, sloths, howler monkeys and other exotic jungle dwellers. You may even snap a photo of the vividly colored poison dart frog. After you check into the Mawamba Lodge you will be served a filling lunch, followed by a guided hike through the jungle and an afternoon boat trip through the canals. Exploring the 47,000 acres of pristine rainforest is a genuine adventure, allowing you to truly experience an exotic jungle habitat. The shoreline of Tortuguero National Park runs 14 miles and is a vital nesting ground for several species of sea turtles, including the giant Leatherback and the green turtle, which can be as large as 400 pounds and are an evolutionary holdover from the age of dinosaurs. Because there are no roads here, the natural waterways and canals comprise the only transportation network. Your trip through the canal system to Tortuguero National Park offers a unique chance to watch monkeys, birds, and lazy yet fierce crocodiles and caimans. After a full
day of fun and adventure, you will likely welcome the chance to return
to your room at the Mawamba Lodge. As the sun recedes under the horizon
you may elect to relax in the hot tub or enjoy the large swimming pool
that is ringed by giant palm trees. For dinner you will savor a tasty
family-style meal of local and international cuisine at a restaurant staffed
by friendly locals. A visit to the lodge during turtle nesting season,
from July to October, will allow you to view these massive green turtles
as they lumber onto the beach to lay their eggs. The lodge offers night
tours on the beach to observe this unforgettable phenomenon. Few countries
protect their turtle nesting sites, thus Cost Rica is one of very few
places on earth where you can observe this awesome spectacle.

OPTION #3: EXPLORE CORCOVADO 4 nights / 5 days Your third option for tropical adventure will take you by plane to Costa Rica’s remote southern Pacific shore for three spectacular days of adventure. The biological diversity and virgin rainforest of the Osa Peninsula makes it one of Costa Rica’s true natural jewels. Inside Corcovado National Park, there exist eight distinct habitats, from mangroves and estuaries to almost impenetrable jungle. Perhaps no other place in Costa Rica provides this unique combination of wilderness and accessibility that one finds in Corcovado. The park is home to 285 species of birds, 116 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 139 mammal species. The wilderness does not stop at the beach, as this area offers what many diving veterans consider to be the finest scuba diving and snorkeling in Costa Rica. If you desire a fantastic journey through diverse, thriving tropical ecosystems, then join us for a magical adventure! Day 4 – Overnight in San José After having lunch in Arenal you will leave for San José, where you will stay at the Hotel Don Carlos or a similar hotel. Once in San José you can spend the day in relaxation and prepare for an early start in the morning. Alternatively, you may go out for a day on the town and experience the superb cuisine available in the capital city. Day 5 – Reaching Corcovado Rejuvenate yourself with an early breakfast and get ready to fly the village of Palma Sur, close to the southern Pacific coast. From Palma Sur we will travel by river to the banana town of Sierpe. From this point a speedboat will take you down 20 miles of river, through mangroves and into the ocean and south into Osa Peninsula’s Drake Bay. Drake Bay abuts Corcovado National Park and is an ideal base for visits to the Caño Island Biological Reserve. This
scenic one-hour trip takes you to the fabulous Jinetes de Osa Hotel, where
from December to May you may watch the migration of humpback whales from
the comfort of your own balcony. If you enjoy diving, then you will be
pleased to know that Jinetes de Osa offers superb diving and snorkeling. Essential for today is a guided hike through the famous Corcovado National Park. Internationally recognized for its biological richness, Corcovado is the perfect place to search for countless animal and plant species while strolling through virgin rain forest. The sight of exotic orchids draping over sparkling crystal streams is almost surreal, like stepping into a parallel universe, a fairly tale come to life. The park’s 13 ecosystems offer a bonanza of thriving plant and animal species, many endemic to this area. A good guide is essential to help you understand this astounding area. Upon your
return from Corcovado you may opt to take it easy and relax by the lodge.
