Our commitment to exemplary sustainable tourism practices

One of our main concerns in the planning and constructing process of the Pacuare Lodge has been to minimally impact the river/rainforest habitat upon which the site is located. No trees were cut on our site of primary rainforest to construct the bungalows and lodge. All building materials were brought in by raft or purchased from the local residents. Wood for the bungalows was purchased from a sustainable reforestation project operated by and benefiting small local farmers. The local Cabecar Indians fashioned roofs for the bungalows with palm leaves, using their traditional methods of sustainable harvest and construction techniques.

The lodge boasts no generators for electricity. Candles are provided for the guests for use in the bungalows, and the main lodge is lit with gas lanterns at night. Gas for cooking is rafted in. An environmentally friendly sewage system with individual septic tanks for each bungalow was designed and constructed to process wastes. All garbage is sorted and biodegradable wastes are processed on site, while any leftover waste is removed by raft.

Costa Rica Nature Adventuress was the first adventure travel company in this area to purchase parcels of primary forest for the sole purpose of conservation. We own close to 30 hectares of primary rainforest, located near the site of our eco-lodge, which were purchased to safeguard its well being. Visitors are not permitted into this area in the interest of protecting this untouched virgin rainforest.

Costa Rica Nature Adventuress has an ongoing Community Support Program to share the benefits of responsible tourism with the local community. To this end we employ indigenous people both permanently, on our lodge management staff, and by contract for activities like maintenance of the palm-thatched roofs.
