Sarapiquí River

Class-III White-Water Rafting

A crystal-clear mountain stream tumbles through some of Costa Rica’s most dazzling tropical greenery, winding through dense rainforests in the land of eternal spring. The stream gathers strength and girth as it enters the lush lowlands, where it is known as the Sarapiquí. It feels like Shangri-La.

Families and white-water novices alike will love this river. Narrow and low-volume, the Sarapiquí has some moderately flowing rapids and plenty of calm stretches. Bird-watchers and other nature lovers will especially enjoy the trip as they wind through lush tropical growth that provides shelter to hummingbirds, toucans, woodpeckers and dozens of other native bird species.

We’ll pick you up at your San José hotel in our comfortable minibus and transport you along rolling coffee fields and lush rural scenery for the two-and-a-half-hour drive to the river put-in. We’ll stop along the way for a tasty traditional breakfast, before continuing on to the river where you will be briefed by our expert guides on all safety precautions. Once in the water, you’ll enjoy a thrilling ride down rushing rapids punctuated by long stretches of placid scenic vistas. A myriad of colorful birds and darting butterflies tease your senses as you marvel at the luxuriant vegetation that straddles the moss covered banks of this delightful river. Lunch will be served on the river’s edge, and includes sandwiches, fruits and dessert. We’ll reach the take-out in the afternoon, where you will be able to change into dry clothes in our private facilities before boarding the minibus for the return trip to San José.
